How can I be sure that I will go to heaven?
How can I have a right relationship with God?
These questions have the same answer. Getting into heaven and being in good standing with God have nothing to do with how good (or bad) we are. Christians have learned and trusted the righteousness of Jesus for answers to these questions.
What does the Bible say about these matters?
Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
We all have sin in our hearts. We all were born with sin. We were born under the power of sin's control.
Romans 6:23a "...The wages of sin is death..."
Sin results in death. We all face physical death, which is a result of sin. But a worse death is spiritual death that alienates us from God and will last for all eternity—what the Bible calls Hell.
Romans 6:23b "...But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Avoiding spiritual death is a free gift from God to you made available by Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
Romans 5:8, "God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us!"
When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for our sins. Colossians 1:22 says that God “has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.”
Romans 10:9,10 "...If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."
To receive eternal life in heaven, we must acknowledge Jesus as Lord or as master of our life. We do this by renouncing our sinful life and doing only what God wants us to do. We must also believe that Jesus died in our place and rose from the dead.
Romans 10:13 "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved!"
What must you do to receive eternal life in heaven and a relationship with God now?
- Acknowledge that you are a sinner.
- Understand that you deserve death for your sin.
- Understand forgiveness for sin and eternal life in heaven is possible as a gift from God—it cannot be earned.
- Ask Jesus to be in charge of your life and believe that God raised him from the dead.
